Waldorf Doll Making Kits

17 February 2010

Even before the recent alarming reports about toxic toys from China, more and more families have come to the Waldorf toys as a safe alternative healthy mass production of plastic toys.

Waldorf toys are toys that complement the innovative educational philosophies of the early twentieth century, Rudolf Steiner. New Steiner approach to education of young children was launched in 1919 in Stuttgart, Germany, in a school for the children of workers cigarette factory Waldorf-Astoria – hence the name "Waldorf". On the basis of Steiner's theories of anthroposophy, some of the ideas underlying Waldorf education may seem a bit esoteric. Still, the ultimate goal – the development of innate talents and abilities of each child – is easy to adopt.

Waldorf toys put emphasis on the care and nurturing of the child. Waldorf toys are preferably handmade rather than mass-produced in a factory. They must be of natural materials, such as wood, wool, cotton and silk, without any harmful chemicals such as toxic paints or varnishes. Waldorf toys are to be simple in design and construction.

All children love to play to dress up, and there are Waldorf toys marketed specifically for this purpose. The play silks, of course, are very versatile to play dress up. They can be skirts, shawls, capes, robes, veils or turbans.
