Original Doll Making

If you love to make original dolls (also known as OOAK or one of a kind), consider that you could one day be as profitable as the Mattel toy company. Mattel employs 25,000 people worldwide but it all began with just one person and a dream. Do you have a dream to have an original doll in the hands of every little girl or collector one day?
The famous toy company Mattel was founded by Ruth and Elliot Handler and Harold Matson. The company began in 1945 out of a garage workshop in southern California.
Although Ruth and Elliot Handler left the company in 1975, the company is still going strong today producing dolls for girls, boys and collectors around the world.
Many other companies started out with just one original doll under their belt. Consider the Candy Fashion Doll line that was originally produced in 1962 then picked up by Marie Osmond’s company in 2006.
Another original doll maker who made it big is Annalee Thorndike. She made her first doll in 1934. Doll making was a hobby that turned into a commercial enterprise in the early 1950s. Today the Annalee Dolls company has become one of the major producers of dolls.
Here is another for you. Ginny Dolls. They date back to 1922 and began as a cottage industry by Jennie Adler Graves in Somerville, Massachusetts. Jennie was skilled as a seamstress and was asked to dress some dolls for a charity event. Jennie then began dressing and selling dolls imported from Germany to Jordan Marsh which was a big department store in Boston at that time. By 1957 Ginny reached over five million dollars in annual sales and was a beloved staple in most American homes. In 1995, the New Vogue Doll Company restored Ginny to their rightful place in the world of modern dolls.
