Sew the seam with a long stitch length, then remove part of your machine as usual by increasing the needle to the highest point, raise the presser foot and cut the threads. This is your basted seams, a seam temporary or preparation for the meeting.
Practice basting straight lines on pieces of cloth until you feel comfortable with the technique. Find many used to spray on their sewing projects.
