Russian Doll Making Process
17 February 2010
Many people ask me how the Russian Matryoshka dolls are made. You may be surprised at how much work goes into each set of Matryoshka dolls.
The tree from which the dolls are produced (usually lemon, birch, poplar or larch) should be straight, without knots and cut in autumn or winter, so the SAP content is minimal.
The trunk is stored to allow it to dry for up to 3 years. After the drying process the Russian dolls are carved to ensure that the top and the bottom half of each doll fit perfectly.
Once the doll carvings are dry the Russian dolls are ready for fine-sanding. After this, all the creative fun stuff can happen. The first artist draws with pencil the eyes, face and clothes for each doll. When the drawing is complete the artist signs his work to ensure compliance of quality standards. After the drawing the artist begins to paint the dolls to give it its individual character.
When you buy a Russian doll directly from an artist the quality of the doll should be carefully examined. Each doll should fit easily with one another and each half of the doll should require a little force to separate them.
