Doll Making Materials

A doll may very well be the first best friend of a child – especially if there are no pets or siblings in the home. Children learn through doll play the act of nurturing and are a positive first step of a child to become social. The way your child cares for his or her dolls are often a reflection of your own parenting style. Take this one step further as your child grows older by creating your own dolls together and watch with joy over how your child, in turn, cares for these dolls. It will be a mirror image of the bond between parent and child.
The whole act of making dolls began with rag dolls, centuries ago. In fact it may have gone even further back to caveman days as doll remnants are often found during architectural digs. Mothers back then, who had never even heard the word ‘recycling’ did exactly that to provide their children with a play toy and friend. Rags from clothing were fashioned to look like babies or adults and weeds and straw were used to give these dolls dimension.
In today’s world if you want to make your own doll your options are limitless. Kits, patterns, sculpting materials, specialty paints and much more than the standard rags of yesteryear are now easily within reach.
