Doll Making: Don’t Forget the Hat

Are you designing period dolls or theme dolls? If so, don’t forget the doll’s hat. You can change the look of your finished doll with a vintage hat style or a fashionable themed hat.

Hats are actually quite an interesting part of fashion study. You can tell a lot about a decade just by looking at the trends of that time. As an example, the ’60s were defined by the free love and hippie clothes. Of the 70 were all about the disco revolution. And 80 gave us so much style and the crazy preppy wave of neon clothing – notice me seemed to be the message of the decade in an over-populated world.

Fashion of late has developed a social conscience, with webs of sustainable manufacturing, green and organic threads and today reflects a greater environmental responsibility which undoubtedly will carry over into the following decades.

Other accessories for your dolls don’t stop at hats though. For instance your hippie inspire doll may wear loose, flowing tops and skirts, layers of fabrics and textures but she’ll also be wearing large sunglasses and a coin belt. Fashion writers called the trend hodgepodge chic where people paid a lot of money to look poor. The 60 and 70s maintained the popular look because it gave women the freedom to mix and match at will expressing their individuality.
